Ronald Stein on His Work

"For me, the various sounds of the piano have colors.  I use these colors to paint a picture.  Melody, harmony and rhythm are only the basic outline of a piece of music.  I want to evoke a feeling, create an ambiance.  If the piece is a song, I refer to the lyrics to help me understand the feeling associated with the music.  I try to color it accordingly.  I use the pedals of the piano to blend the tones, to create a certain aura, often minimizing the percussive nature of the piano to emphasize its qualities as a stringed instrument. My goal is to reach my listeners emotionally, to give them a musical experience they will find meaningful. "
